The quick answer
In the United States, most paid drone work requires an FAA Remote Pilot Certificate under Part 107. Certification is the baseline, not the career: build expertise in a client outcome such as inspection, photogrammetry, video production or data processing, then document safe, repeatable work.
Part 107 is the U.S. starting point
The FAA requires a Remote Pilot Certificate to operate under Part 107. First-time applicants must be at least 16, meet language and fitness requirements, pass the UAG knowledge test and complete the application process. Certificate holders must complete online recurrent training every 24 calendar months.

Skills employers and clients value
Airspace planning, weather judgment and maintenance logs establish trust. Role-specific value comes from camera craft, editing, GIS, photogrammetry, thermography, inspection standards or project management. Learn how a client uses the deliverable; an attractive flight is not useful if the data cannot support a decision.
Build a credible portfolio
Create two or three complete sample projects with a brief, risk plan, captured data and finished deliverable. Explain your role, equipment, constraints and results without exposing client information. Apply through specialist service firms, engineering and construction companies, media teams, public agencies and direct local outreach.
Pay, pricing and business reality
Compensation varies too widely by region, employment model, equipment, risk and technical specialty for a single honest salary figure. Compare local job listings, define the full scope and price travel, planning, insurance, editing, data processing and revisions-not only flight time.
