The fundamental principle behind this anti-drone system is pretty straightforward. You simply need to disrupt the radio signal from the user of the aircraft and substitute it with your own control signal. Interestingly, this has already been done in the field. Take for example the Swiss police force, which used a bazooka-style anti-drone gun as part of its security operations. And do you know where they used it? It was during the height of the World Economic Forum.
Drone jamming technology is quite like the anti-drone technology. Well, actually, it is – but the way it is done is very much different. This technology is capable of blocking the standard 2.4Ghz radio frequency, though some of the newer models can jam up to 5.8Ghz radio frequency. And mind you, some jammers out there can cover a blocking range of about 1500 meters. It is so effective and superb that even the highest-altitude UAV can be brought down. In a sense, you will not worry about someone spying or disturbing your personal privacy.
The concept of drone jamming technology is as simple as anti-drone technology. Basically, it can block GPS, WIFI signals,and even cellular communication, just to name a few. In some cases, the drone could belong to a person using it for exploits and other illegal activities. As such, law enforcement will easily have the means to confiscate the drone. And since it is intact, it will have evidence and surveillance whatsoever for whatever purpose they would deed necessary. Now, if the quad’s protocol is to return to home base as soon as the fall-back mode activates, law enforcement could track down its path and find the exploiter.
As mentioned above, the drone jamming technology is purposely built to block radio signals, as well as cellular communication, GPS, and WIFI signals. Apparently, though, doing any of these is considered illegal in various countries, states, and/or municipalities. In other words, you could not just purchase a jammer and get away with it. Law enforcement might be onto you right away. So before you even jump into this decision of buying and using a jammer, it is important to check your local regulations first. It is worth noting, too, that the utilization of drone jamming technology is often limited and allowed to military, federal, or other law enforcement bodies. This is simply due to the fact that the law permits them to do so.
You might think that using the phrase“necessary evil” is too much, but it is actually the closest one. It holds true that nobody in the drone industry desires to witness drones falling from mid-air. So what could possibly be the options? It is interesting to note that the anti-drone technology market is packed with competing methods when it comes to handling rogue unmanned aerial vehicles. For example, there is this Dutch company that trains eagles in order to help bring down drones. It is not necessarily a modern approach, but his unconventional solution guarantees results. But it is perhaps the more restrained solutions to counter-drone technology that hold the biggest potential of all.These include the likes of GPS interference, software exploitation, and radio interference. Some of these solutions introduce the combination of electronic,visual, and audio detection methods, which are proven to cover different types of UAVs.
It is truly disappointing to see your drone captured or jammed, especially when all you want is to fly it. But hey, it is what it is. But how can drone users like you and companies prevent their unmanned aerial vehicles from getting captured or disabled? Surprisingly, your best course of action here is to work alongside the law enforcement and regulators. That way, clearer rules will be generated and implemented. In addition, manufacturers of drones may consider forestalling heavy-handed regulation by any building or property in warnings straight into a drone’s systems. For example, it could have a feature that alerts you if the drone is getting close to a restricted area. Such warnings could be extremely beneficial, as it can nudge drone hobbyists to start better managing their aircraft. It can be agreed that The Dobby Selfie Drone is one of the best foldable drones. Not only is it extremely portable, but it can also help you take a bunch of great selfies. But there is one thing that people could possibly have second thoughts about buying it: its price. Yes, that is right – it is reportedly sitting at almost $400. Considering the amount, it is clear that it is beyond being cheap or reasonable, especially if your goal is to just take a couple of selfies. This is exactly where this drone can help you a lot.
Its starting price is just around $50. Given the figure involved, you can always expect this folding drone to lack the benefits of having a couple of advanced features. This is most especially if the goal is to better the features found on more expensive ones. It is worth noting, though, that this drone does not come with a gimbal or an adjustable camera. Lastly, it uses its own brushed motors. All of these are made just to cut costs.

Parrot SA is one of the leading companies that manufacture drones. Jean-Pierre Talvard, Henri Seydoux, and Christine/M De Tourvel established the company in 1994. In most cases, when it comes to the topic of controlling a drone, the pilot has complete and precise control over its motors. A simple nudge of the throttle will immediately translate into a proportional increase in RPM. The same can be said for input in ailerons, rudders, and other parts that affect direction and speed.
Commonly known as FC, a drone flight controller is dubbed the heart of any quadcopter. It is responsible for controlling almost all onboard electrical components, though it requires assistance on an array of parts (e.g. microprocessor, sensors, etc.). That way, you can be confident in choosing the right one for your application.
Over the years, drone controllers have significantly evolved. Their processors tend to become faster to keep up as flight controller software continues to revolutionize. Flight drone controllers are typically titled to include their main microprocessors model, with STM electronics and 32-bit microprocessors being the popular ones. As such, it gives the user a concrete idea of his controller’s capabilities and features.
STM32 F1, F3, F4, and F7 are considered the most common models. In case you are wondering, the higher the number you see besides “F,” the faster its microprocessor is; hence, the functionality is much more interesting.
For any pilot looking to buy a drone flight controller, it is ideal to purchase a model that has either an F4 or F7. That is because these are designed to be fast enough to process the latest FC firmware. Unfortunately, the F1 is looking to be a lot slower these days, especially with the rise of newer ones. It is simply not a recommended buy, as it is expected to become unsupported anytime soon.
F3 boards, on the other hand, have the ability to run the latest FC firmware. The only catch, though, is that their microprocessor is somewhat consequently slower when compared to F4 and F7 in terms of reading and sensor response inputs. The two inputs are known, respectively, as the gyro update frequency and the PID loop frequency.
You might be wondering, “what firmware is this all about?” Basically, the drone controller is connected to a computer via a micro USB in order for it to be flashed with firmware specific to its configurator software. This process is needed in order to program the device for it to work accordingly. The firmware then configures the board with the correct program and settings necessary in managing and controlling the quadcopter.
Meanwhile, the USB interface enables connection between the drone flight controller and its configurator; hence, the user is capable of modifying and changing the different board settings (i.e. failsafe setup, PIDs, rates, receiver configuration, varying flight models, etc.).
A general rule of thumb applied to all FCs is to flash them with the latest available firmware. As such, it is possible to improve a drone’s flight characteristics and, at the same time, prevent the possibility of software issues.
It is worth noting that it is possible to flash an FC with firmware for utilization with different configurators, such as Betaflight, Raceflight, or KISS, among others, – if and only if they are compatible. Keep in mind that all of these configurators have specific benefits unique to them. And while their advantages and disadvantages greatly differ from one other, a user’s go-to configuration is merely subjective.
As far as a general recommendation is concerned, it is better to use either KISS or Raceflight, as long as it is either one is compatible. Otherwise, go for Betaflight as it is the most common configurator. This one has an open source nature that greatly offers compatibility with almost all known drone flight controllers today.
A drone flight controller is installed to a UAV frame through the use of four equally-spaced mounting holes. As of now, the standards suggest 30.5mm by 30.5mm spacing between hole diameters, and this one goes to the 220-sized quadcopter.
A common spacing dimension on a 70-30-sized quadcopter is 20mm by 20mm. The mounting holes here differ a bit, as they are usually 3mm in diameter. It is also expected for smaller mounting patterns to exist, but they are usually used for quadcopters with sub 70mm size. Most, if not all, drone controllers are designed to make use of mounting holes that are quite larger than 3mm diameter. This is meant to enable insertion of rubber grommets, which, in turn, help in the isolation of the FC from motor vibration.
As far as connecting external components directly to the drone flight controller is concerned, they can be bought together with pin header holes, plugs, solder pads. Also in most cases, a combination of the three. Solder pads are proven to be the most useful among these items. With their firm compact and preferred connection, it is easy to achieve a clean and low profile, as well as some inclusion of external componentry connections.
Although pin header holes are a thing these days on most drone controllers, hobbyists tend to solder wires directly the holes instead of using a servo plug to solder header pins and connect the wires. Regardless, they are proven to dramatically reduce weight and make the connection of profiles seamless.

Imagine a drone that has all the video features you can think of. Would you say it is a great steal? Of course, it is. This is exactly what the Propel HD Video drone offers. Not only does it offer a broad camera capability, it also records in high-definition. And mind you, every picture it captures is still. You also have the ability to stream all videos on your mobile device. What also makes this drone a great bang for your buck is its landing capability. With just a push of a button, you can lands it with ease. Now, can you tell which drone on the market has such a feature? This drone comes with a digital controller, li-poly battery, micro SD HC card reader, and a number of extra parts for replacement purposes.
Next on the list is none other than the Propel Atom 1.0 Micro Drone. This one here is, in fact, one of the best-selling Propel drones to data. This is largely due to its sleek design and affordability. It has some nice LED lights on it, making its overall design totally pleasant to the eye. This one is so tiny that it can fit on your clothing compartment in a matter of seconds. Even more so, it will not burn a huge hole in your pocket as it goes very easy on the budget.
Batteries and Weight – The Propel atom 1.0 micro drone requires two AAA batteries for its controller while. The vehicle itself, though, utilizes a rechargeable Li-Poly battery. Meanwhile, the package arrives with an owner’s manual, replaceable parts, and a USB charging cord.
It only weighs about 14.5 grams, which already covers the propeller blades and batteries. The drone has a measurement of 2.5 inches and 1 inch in length and width, respectively. Surprisingly, it has a flying capability that records between 7 and 10 minutes. This is already superb considering a charging time of only 30 to 45 minutes.
Perfect For Beginners – If you are new to this hobby, then you might want to consider buying the Propel Atom 1.0 micro drone. It has a controller setting that allows you to move the aircraft according to how the joystick is moved or controlled. This capability will eventually help you learn about flight and, in no time, you will become an expert at performing 360-degree stunts among many others. However, like any other tiny drone, it faces a common issue. When you use this indoors on a carpet, it can easily acquire hairs from the latter. Even more so, these hairs can wrap around its own propellers.
First and foremost, you do not have to be a “Star Wars” fan in order to enjoy this cool drone. Second, and more importantly, you do not need the “FORCE” to be with you. Kidding aside, propel drones are the future in this hobby. But before you decide to get one for yourself, it is time to dig in deeper and know what a propel drone has to offer.
If you grew up watching George Lucas’ massive franchise, at one time or another, you have surely fantasized about the idea of flying an X-Wing. Or perhaps you were looking forward to the TIE Fighter and/or the Millennium Falcon drone. Because let’s admit it: any of these aircraft are so cool to fly with. There is no doubt that these fictional vehicles are heavily ingrained in the collective western culture of every fan out there. Fortunately, Propel has found a way to bring these aircraft to life!
While there have been countless of incarnations in the past (e.g. LEGO, video games, action figures, etc.), they failed to deliver an experience that is a result of a combination of an authentic appearance and flying capability. Sure, Spin Master might have come close, the company’s newest lineup which his designed after the famed movie series is on a whole new level. These drones have set the standards so incredibly high that the company’s competitors might need a couple more years before they can do something like it.
Still, like so many drone models out there, it still needs to answer a question: Did it really please drone enthusiasts? You can say it did goo with “Star Wars” fans, but you have to include other drone hobbyists here. Let’s find out.
Propel’s robust and thriving lineup offers a total of three models. They sell about $170 or more each. You have the freedom to go with Star Wars 74-Z Speeder Bike. You may also like the Star Wars TIE Advanced X1, which has a huge following nowadays. Lastly, you can never go wrong with the Star Wars T-65 X-Wing Starfighter. At first, the company wanted to include a Millennium Falcon, but it seems to be on hold.
Propel drones themselves appear to be small and featherweight models and can be controlled using the 2.4Ghz remote control, which is included in the kit. What is even interesting here is that the remote can be integrated with a smartphone via Bluetooth, so you can achieve more flexibility and control capabilities. Even more so, the integration (available on iOS and Android) offers training simulations and live battle tracking.
Moreover, these propel drones can be flown in both indoors and outdoors, with a maximum speed of up to 35 MPH. The company even boasts that these unmanned aerial vehicles can soar up to a couple of hundred feet away. And if these qualities do not convince you, you should be glad knowing that they come with emitters/receivers, all of which are equipped with infrared and visible light capabilities. These features, in particular, can be utilized for battling, so to speak.
But hey, there is something unusual about these drones – they are inverted. Yes, that is right – their props appear face down instead of up. In other words, they are directly pushed into the air instead of being pulled. It is vague, however, if this design gives advantages in terms of control and flight. Nonetheless, it is safe to say that these drones are equipped with the right system for preserving the very look of these iconic Star Wars-inspired vehicles.
Since they have no propellers visible above – there is a tiny set of transparent props below, though – it makes the experience of controlling a real-life Star Wars aircraft a lot easier and more fun. And if you happen to bump them into the ceiling, there is nothing you need to worry about. That is because they will just keep pushing on that barrier until the batteries die or if you decide to bring them back down.
Remember when the first part of this review said that Propel has some of the coolest drones on the market? Well, this is a testament to that. You see, the Batwing drone HD is a one-of-a-kind Propel drone. Not only is it heavily inspired by the Cape Crusader’s Batwing, but it also comes with a couple of interesting features.
So, what exactly is the Batwing Drone HD? What makes a unique Propel drone? What sets it apart from the Propel HD Video Drone, Propel Atom 1.0 Micro Drone, and the Star Wars-inspired models?
The Batwing Drone HD is a budget quadcopter and has two models to offer. The HD model (costs about $100), in particular, comes with a 720p camera on board, which is designed specifically for taking snaps and videos. But if you are not the type of who has high filming standard, you can always go with the camera-free model. Hey, it is only $30 less. That is pretty interesting enough, no?
This Propel drone has proven to be a great way of outliving one’s childhood fantasy, particularly that of being the Dark Knight. It is also a perfect starter drone for beginners and/or novice flyers. Just keep in mind, though, that there are build quality issues involved. Meaning, you might need to obtain some spare parts. Overall, it is a fantastic drone considering its price and functionality.
There is no doubt that Propel has exceeded expectations here. Its designers, in particular, have exerted tons of effort into making the Batwing Drone HD akin to a tiny plane. It is a bold move rather than going with the decision to attach propellers to a Batman symbol. Nonetheless, it is a crime not to acknowledge the fact that some of its sections seem to resemble the need for streamlining.
As mentioned, the drone’s design is what makes this Propel drone a great steal. Its cockpit section has a glossy finish, seemingly complementing the aircraft’s matte black spray on the rest of the body. Perhaps a slight letdown here is its plastic-ish feeling, making it look a little bit cheap. You cannot really blame the designers here, though. The finish itself was perhaps made in order to maintain and keep the weight down.
Being a quadcopter drone, the Batwing-inspired Propel drone needs four propellers to fly. Interestingly, you will see eight blades that are all supplied in the box. So if something bad happens, say, you broke one propeller or more, you have the luxury to make repairs and replacement. Add to these are a set of propeller guard. By the way, Propel recommends that these propellers must be used at all times. Of course, it is really up to you and how you control your drone.
If you are a novice hobbyist who is looking to get into drones – or you are simply a huge Batman fan – then the Batwing Drone HD can be an excellent starting point for you. It has intuitive parts to offer and some interesting features. Above anything else, it is so easy to use. There is a build quality concern here, though. It is basically the drone’s longevity. But hey, if you can restrict yourself to an open field, go with crash-landings that have grass. The latter can help in softening landings. If you do, you should be alright.
As you can, see Propel has lots of interesting drones to offer. From the ever-popular Propel HD video drone to the DC-inspired Batwing HD/micro drone, this company really has some cool pop culture ideas on its pockets, not to mention the more high-tech UAVs on its resume.

Would you agree with me if I tell you that most beginners hesitate to get their first drone simply because they don’t have the right information to do so?
Who would say that entering into the fascinating world of drones and RC aviation gadgets is such of a hassle. And the thing is, believe it or not, that lots of people have had a bad experience with their first drone simply because they either followed the wrong guide to do so, or don’t have any idea of what to look for when buying a drone.
You can find a lot of places online saying they’ve done all the research for you and come up with a list of the top 10 drones in the market, however, I’m going to throw a bomb here: That is not real, is not possible.
Why, you ask?
It is true that certain gadgets perform better than others for the majority of people, for the average pilot. However, and especially in the case of a beginner, you are not the average pilot, you are a beginner who wants to spend as little as possible and still get the best for your money, right?
That is why today we are going to touch base on the things that nobody wants to say about drones, but can help you save a bunch of money and time. And here is the first one to state the tone clear of this post: drones are also cheap and fun gadgets that everybody can enjoy, and this guide will show you exactly what to look for in order to get the best for you.
Noticed how I said that drones are also cheap and fun gadgets? That is because drones can also be neither cheap nor fun to play with, if you do things in the wrong way.
It is true that some of the best drones in the market are above $1000 USD. That is not cheap. Also these drones require other specialized gear to work at 100% of its capacity.
For the beginner pilot, I would never recommend to go with one of these, because not only you’ll be spending huge money, but also, if you crash, that’s where all the fun goes down.
Now you know and you can’t say you weren’t warned. If you are a beginner with a big budget, take that path only at your own risk.
Well, in the case of a beginner, here is the best way (in my opinion) to do things: Get one of the plenty of options available of cheap drones for beginners (I’m talking about drones under 100 USD).
These drones should be high quality and decent enough to provide you with the right flight experience. Also, your piloting skills will be developed, which is crucial for when you get a higher-budget device (In 99% of the cases, it is the lack of these skills which leads to crashing a drone).
There are many advantages of going this way with drones, but the most obvious one is that you won’t be tearing your wallet to get one of these.
There is still a chance that you don’t like the models other people recommend, and that by doing your own research, you see a model that is visually appealing to you.
If this is the case, then there is a set of things I want you to do before hitting the buy now button. These are what in my experience will make it of brake it for you. In fact, there are 9 super simple but yet effective things I always do before taking any decision.
Here they are so that you can do the same and get the best for your money.
Here is a bit more detail on the steps mentioned in the infographic. The intention is to help you understand the basic aspects you have to look for when buying a drone.
Start with a round number for your budget. This should be a broad idea of the amount of money you are willing to spend. At first it may appear like this is the price tag plus tax of your gadget, but we are about to discover that there are other things to consider.
This is why right now we are just pre-defining a budget, and as we move through the process, we’ll fine-tune this number.
It is very important to decide what is your purpose with this drone. Do you want it for racing? Aerial photography? Landscaping? Just to have fun?
Many times, people are not interested in taking pictures or video with a drone, and if this is your case, you should be looking for a drone without camera, since the camera increases the cost.
This is just an example of why deciding ahead of time your purpose with drones can help you save money, time, and energy when buying one.
Truth is that most people are crazy about drones just because of the camera attached to them.
The opportunity to see the world from above is closer than never before. But like I said, cameras increase the drone price, so be sure to consider this when deciding which drone to buy.
If a camera is a must for you, a gimbal may also be required, which is a piece of equipment that helps to increase the image quality by absorbing the vibration of the drone.
If this is your case, probably one of the best drones under 200 dollars is a better option for you.
Most drones today come with a built-in camera, however, some models may carry different types of cameras, so it is important you check this while doing your research of a specific drone model.
These days, batteries give very little flight time, compared with the period you have to wait for these batteries to recharge. In most cases, you’ll get 6 – 9 minutes of flight, and spend 90 – 120 minutes charging the battery.
This is one of the biggest downsides of drones, but batteries with a different technology have not been developed yet, at least not commercially.
The best cure for this problem is to buy extra batteries, which are super affordable and can be easily swapped. So for your budget, include the cost of extra batteries as well.
This is true for every beginner pilot. Inevitably, crashes will happen and each one will bring a unique lesson to hone your piloting skills.
However, there is a lesson that may not be as visible as the ones you’ll learn from your crashes. Once a hard hit breaks a piece of your drone, you’ll be looking for spare parts.
At that moment, you may realize the vendor does not sell parts separately for fixes, rather, they only sell complete units.
I’ve heard this story many times, and it happens more often than you think.
That is why you have to include spare parts in your budget, and actually, buy them right when you buy your drone.
If you discover spare parts are not available, run from it, that device is not a good deal.
These acronyms refer to the type of device you are getting. The labels are present in the boxes and in the product descriptions online.
An RTF device comes Ready To Fly out of the box, which means once the battery is charged, the drone is ready to use.
An ARF drone comes Almost Ready to Fly, so a bit of assembly will be required before being able to operate the drone.
The BNF are the trickiest ones. Bind aNd Fly, which means the drone does not include a transmitter (remote control) inside the box.
Thus, you are required to have one to operate the drone. In many cases, this transmitter can be your smartphone, so be sure to check this before buying a BNF model.
This is one of those steps you can’t skip. Even when most people do read reviews and check comments, most beginners do not have a criterion to sort through these opinions.
First of all, make sure the item has at least 80% acceptance rate (4 out of 5 stars) minimum.
I always tell people to buy drones with at least 20 review. Less than 20 with high acceptance rate and you could be seeing manipulated reviews.
If you insist in getting a drone with less than 20 opinions, then check to see if bad reviews are present.
If not, comments may be manipulated. Many eCommerce sellers pay people for submitting fake comments to their product pages.
In my opinion, a good device earns genuine reviews from people who test them. These genuine reviews are long and thorough, and while not all comments will be like that, a few will be.
This is the unequivocal signature of a drone that is earning good comments because of its quality.
It’s time to fine tune your budget and prepare to make your choice. At this point, you should have a few models you are interested in.
Make sure you have included everything this process mentioned in terms of costs (extra batteries, spare parts, registration fees, gimbal if needed, and any other accessory that your application requires) and prepare to hit the buy now button.
This is the final step before making the call. Just make sure you read enough reviews and checked for authenticity. Finalize your budget and get ready to start your journey in the world of drones.

A racing drone, by essence, is a small quadcopter UAV or unmanned aerial vehicle. It is specifically designed to compete in first-person view or FPV racing events, most of which are held in major cities across the world. It is worth noting that racing drones are not similar to camera drones. The latter is more about being “slow and low” and is meant to capture high-quality video of real estate, surfing contests, and landscapes, just to name a few. A drone FPV racer is not capable of doing these.
You might be surprised to find out that drones for FPV racing are completely different than the standard ones on the market. FPV racing drones are purposely built to be lighter and smaller in order to be more agile when in mid-air. Standard drones, on other the hand, are often bulky devices. Instead of having pure agility and speed – qualities that are common in a drone FPV racer – they are meant to focus more on providing a steady flight.
Considering the aforementioned, it is safe to say that racing drones speak of durability despite being extremely lightweight in terms of materials used. Make no mistake, though. They are made of carbon fiber, but the sturdiness they offer is beyond expectations. Moreover, this type of drones is often paired up with enthusiast-grade receives and transmitters, both of which are responsible for annihilating any input and latency lag that could possibly occur. And since these drones offer “mushroom antennas,” you can always expect a lag-free experience when it comes to controls and live feed.
A racing drone assembled straight from the box definitely offers a lot of fun. But once you have honed your skills and spent an adequate time flying, there is no doubt you are ready for the next step: working on a drone kit. A drone racing kit is simply the perfect stepping stone from playing a pre-assembled to building a racing done on your own. Although it varies from one kit to another, a DIY drone racing kit typically comes with all the necessary components. It is just up to you to build it and make it a reality.
What you get really depends on the kit. While some are pretty much basic, there are those that have components required in building a quadcopter. For instance, you already have a headset and/or a transmitter. It might be best to move forward with a basic drone kit. But if you want to ensure that everything is perfect and will work accordingly, go for the full version.
If you barely have the time to think about how your drone works apart from charging batteries and replacing propellers, even a drone kit can be quite overwhelming. Interestingly, once you are familiar with the components listed below, things may become a bit more manageable.
Batteries – These are the ones that give power to your drone, so it can fly. While bigger batteries can provide more power, they can also weigh more. This is where you need to find the right ratio between weight and power, as it is crucial when looking for speed.
Battery Charger – Obviously, you would need a charger in order to recharge the batteries once they run out.
Camera – A good camera simply makes a huge difference. You can cruise without having to worry about smashing, as you can clearly see any obstacle. More importantly, it makes the flight experience more intense.
Electronic Speed Controllers – The electronic speed controllers are responsible for allowing your drone to either speed up or slow down. Basically, when you use your radio transmitter to manipulate your drone’s speed, the electronic speed controllers translate the signal into the correct voltage. Once done, it immediately sends it to the motors.
Frame – This one here is what gives your drone its distinctive shape. More importantly, it serves as the very base that everything else is attached to. Some frames are made of plastic, which is especially true for hobbyists who use quadcopters. If your goal is to build a racing drone, go for a frame that is as light as possible. This should make your toy fly faster, as there is less weight to haul around an obstacle.
Flight Controller – This is simply your drone’s central processor, a very important component. If you want a better processing power, it is ideal to buy the more expensive ones. They do not only make your drone smarter, but they also allow it to be more responsive than cheaper ones.
Goggles – Headsets can vary depending on quality and cost. For instance, you buy a headset and pay for as low as $50. The only catch, however, is that it provides pixelated images. This will likely to interfere with your ability to navigate an obstacle or course. Even more so, it significantly diminishes the pleasures of FPV flying. If you want a fully immersive experience, go with headsets that offer an amazing solution. Sure, they will cost you hundreds of dollars, but the quality and experience they provide are top-notch.
Motors – As the name suggests, it powers your drone’s propellers to make it fly. In most cases, a drone may have one motor to each propeller. This is done in order to make the drone fly much faster.
Propellers – These are those spinning blades that generate lift and velocity. Although they vary from one drone kit to another, they usually come with 2, 3 or 4 blades and may differ in sizes.
The Power Distribution Board – Also known as PDB, this one sends power from your drone’s battery all the way to places it needs to go (i.e. flight controller, receiver, video transmitter, etc.). Think of it as your toy’s spinal cord, which, in turn, sends electrical impulses to all working parts.
Receiver – This one is in charge of receiving signals from the transmitter. To put it simply, it allows you to communicate with your drone. And since both the receiver and transmitter must work together, they need to be compatible. Do not worry, though. Any drone racing kit will give you compatible components
Radio Transmitter – This is without a doubt the one component you do not want to skimp on. You do not just use it to communicate with your toy but also control the latter. So, as much as possible, do not be a cheapskate when looking and buying a radio transmitter.
Video Transmitter – A video transmitter is what sends images that are captured by your drone’s camera to the video receiver found in your headset. Some video transmitters are designed to allow users to change channel and frequency, among other features..
Other Things You Will Need
Once you have chosen a kit, keep in mind that you will still need tools so you can perform the actual assembly. Some of them may be available in your home tool kit, but others will probably require you to buy separately. Even the most experienced pilot crashes sometimes, so it is only best to have a good collection of tools. That way, you can easily make repairs and rebuild your drone. They are just a worthwhile investment. Here’s a list of tools that you need to have on hand:
There is actually an interesting logic why many have chosen to build their own drone from scratch. If you are the type who simply loves to experiment or venture on a new path, then this is reason enough to get you started. For starters, you always have the advantage to either modify or replace some parts and replace each one of them with something you think is of better quality or performance. Add to this the fact that a drone racing kit can teach you more about how your drone works and, at the same time, how it can be controlled for optimal results. But like everything else, though, there are always pros and cons.
A Sense of Self-Achievement – Building a drone on your own can give you a revered feeling of achievement and success. This is most especially once you see it fly after building.
Upgrading Purposes – As mentioned above, using a racing drone kit allows you to replace and/or change parts with something new and improved. If you purchase a pre-built drone, there is no way for you to upgrade it, let alone replace it for better performance.
Enriches learning – This is definitely one of the coolest things about making your own drone. It simply enriches your learning experience. As you watch how everything works coordinate, you eventually acquire knowledge on how to assemble, fix, and replace parts.
It Can Cost You A Bit – Let’s be honest here: building a drone turns is just straightforward costlier than buying one. That is because you have to buy all the accessories yourself and, more often than not, they tend to be expensive when bought separately. Since you want to make a sturdy drone, you want to go with high-quality parts. And yes, they are usually more expensive.
Time and Patience Consuming – When you are out there building a drone from scratch, you will not only need an ample of time. You will also need patience – a lot of it. And mind you, it is not something that you can just complete in a single sitting. It will really require hours. So unless you have the patience, it might not be a good idea to buy a DIY drone kit.
No Guarantees – Just because you built a drone from a drone kit, it does not mean it would fly. There is always a chance that it will go the other way around. And yes, it can really be disheartening. This is most especially the case if you find a defect or a broken part.
You Must Have The Technical Know-How – There is a reason why buying a drone kit is not highly-encouraged for first-timers. You see, building from scratch requires a good amount of technical expertise. It is not something that you can learn overnight. Keep in mind that you will be making and calibrating the drone on your own. Sure, you can obtain knowledge from various online tutorials and YouTube videos, but most are things that you need to learn on your own.
Now that you clearly know and understand what drone kits are for, it is time to check some of them.

Not to sugar coat it, but the drone is absolutely awesome. You can buy it for about $55, which is not terribly expensive for a drone with lots of features. To ensure its strength, it is made of durable plastic and even has extra propellers. It also has propeller guards, though it would still be best to fly it carefully. That is because these guards do not necessarily make the drone invulnerable, especially when it hits something very hard.
The Striker Spy Drone is also ready-to-fly and has a simple battery charge. The only catch, though, is that most flights with this drone tend to last for about 4 minutes. While it can be quite hard to handle from little to strong winds, you can expect a pretty stable flight from this quadcopter. In addition, make sure you do not let it fly too high. Since it is quite light, it can easily be carried away by a strong gust.
As for its built-in camera, it arrives with a 2GB SD memory card. Sure, it is not the best camera out there, but the drone’s ability to allow you to watch a video of the flights is fascinating enough.

Since this drone comes in at under a $100, you do not really have to expect so much from it. Although it is ready to fly out of the box and comes with an acceptable battery charge, you cannot expect more than 4 minutes of flight time from this quadcopter. Unless it is windy, the drone can prove to be stable. But since it is light, you have to fly with caution when it is quite windy outside. A single strong gust of wind is enough to knock the toy far away.
As for its camera, it is already built in but does not allow a live feed. Meaning, there is no first-person view or FPV capability. And while its camera is reasonable for its price, a great cinematography is not necessarily achievable. But, as mentioned above, you will love the idea of watching videos of your flight.
If you are the type who prefers a drone with a headless mode, then this is not for you. It does not have such a feature. The interesting part, however, is that World Tech Toys made sure that the drone’s front propellers and guards are colored red. By doing so, you will know exactly where the toy is headed. So, in other words, this somehow answers the need for a headless mode.
Like every cheaper drone out there, the motors on this drone are brushed. In case you did not know, this is the type of motor that is quite cheaper than brushless. While you can be glad about its affordability, keep in mind that there is a downfall – it tends to get hot and, if unintended, it overheats easily.
With all pros and cons considered, the Striker Spy Drone is no way close to a deal breaker. It may not have the most advanced motors out there, but for its price, it is safe to say it is a reasonable toy to own. It would be best, too, if you find and get some spare motors. Again, you can try the likes of Amazon and eBay or, if possible, go directly to the manufacturer’s website. The reason for buying some extras, as the drone’s motors could possibly stop working after a couple of flights.
While there are plenty of drones on the market that can perform better, the Striker Spy Drone is a great steal for a drone that costs a hundred bucks. It may not have superiority in terms of battery life, but the joy it gives at an affordable price is incomparable.
